## School Is Back in Session

**Secrets of Strixhaven** drops on April 24th and it's shaping up to be one of the most exciting sets of 2026. The original Strixhaven gave us the beloved Mystical Archive and a university setting brimming with spellslinger energy. This time around, Wizards is cranking the dial to eleven with five Elder Dragons that each hand out absurd keywords, a wild new mechanic called **Prepared**, and a Mystical Archive that includes some of the most powerful spells in Magic's history.

Whether you're a Commander player eyeing the precons, a Standard grinder looking for new tools, or someone who just wants to crack packs at prerelease, let's break down everything that matters.

## The Five Elder Dragons

The headliners of Secrets of Strixhaven are five mythic Elder Dragons, one for each college. Each one grants a powerful keyword to all your instant and sorcery spells. Yes, you read that right. All of them.

### Lorehold, the Historian

The Boros dragon enters at 5 mana with flying and haste, which is already a solid rate. But the real text is this: **every instant and sorcery in your hand gains Miracle 2**. Lorehold also lets you discard a card on each opponent's upkeep, keeping your hand cycling and your miracle triggers live.

Seven mana is a lot, but Prismari gives every instant and sorcery you cast **Storm**. Let that sink in. You cast three spells before your removal spell? That removal spell now resolves four times. ### Quandrix, the Proof

### Silverquill, the Disputant

The cheapest of the five at just 4 mana, Silverquill gives every instant and sorcery **Casualty 1**. In a deck that creates tokens — and Orzhov is great at that — every spell you cast becomes a free copy. Flying and vigilance mean Silverquill is also a solid attacker and blocker while it fuels your engine. This might quietly be the most constructed-playable of the bunch.

### Witherbloom, the Balancer

Eight mana looks intimidating until you read **Affinity for creatures**. In a go-wide Golgari deck, this can easily cost 3 or 4 mana. Flying and deathtouch make it a terrifying blocker and attacker, and giving all your spells affinity for creatures means your removal and card draw become absurdly cheap. In Commander with a board full of tokens, you're casting spells for pennies.

## The Prepared Mechanic

**Prepared** is the marquee new mechanic and it's unlike anything we've seen before. Creatures with Prepared carry a spell on the right half of the card. When the creature _"becomes prepared"_, a copy of that spell appears in exile and you can cast it following normal timing rules. Casting the spell unprepares the creature.

Think of it like a creature that comes with a free spell strapped to its back. Some creatures enter prepared automatically, while others require you to meet a condition first.

## What to Watch for at Prerelease

If you're heading to prerelease on April 24th, here are a few tips:

- **Prepared creatures are two-for-ones.** Prioritize them in Limited — you're getting a body and a spell.
- **Paradigm cards snowball fast.** If your opponent resolves a Paradigm sorcery and you don't have an answer, the free copies every turn will bury you.
- **Increment creatures reward going big.** If you're in Simic, don't be afraid to spend more mana than you need to — your creatures will grow.
- **The Mystical Archive cards are real.** Unlike some bonus sheets, these are playable in Limited. The Magic the Gathering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set is positively rife with humor, in jokes, and funny meme references. As I sit here, alone in a dark room, opening up (metaphorical) packs of this much beloved set, I just can't stop laughing. The humor and jokes that ninja turtles inject into Magic the Gathering are just that funny! So come along with me on this rollercoaster ride of fun as we go through the top 5 funniest cards in the most recent magic set.

Anyone who ate this pizza would have stinky breath for days! And who knows what sort of calamity this would bring to the New York sewer system! I can just imagine a large sentient turtle taking a bite of this just to gross out more normie consumers of pizza. What funny, sitcom-like hijinks could ensue if just one of these were allowed to exist?

Because this is an island, the humor is more cerebral than most of the other jokes in the set. You have to think about it, just like how blue players are forced to think about why no one wants to play with them anymore. And if you think even more, the jokes just go deeper. Like a deep-dish pizza, this humor is extra thicc. The pizza is pretending to be an island. Maybe the pizza can get away with fooling the mono-white plains players, but to try and fool the blue players, this is truly an effort in futility. But then you realize, the blue players are in on the joke. They aren't fooled into treating foods as lands, they're tricking everyone else into thinking their foods tap for blue mana. They don't even need Urza anymore! By just slapping a fancy shaped onion onto their lunch they now have all the mana they need to ruin your day. It's because of those hilarious reasons that this is easily the 4th funniest reference in the TMNT set!

Now, I know I promised not to include another pizza card, but after reconsidering all the hilarious jokes in this collection of cardboard, I just had to include this next one. Trust me, you'll be laughing just as much as I am when you see this card! Besides, promises are like windows; they're made to be broken.

And speaking of windows, this next card shattered the window of seriousness like a large, pizza-shaped brick.
I've got one word for you: cannibalism. Such a funny word and such a funny concept. With this <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TMT-257" title="Pizza Forest" />, TMNT explores such laugh-inducing topics in a subtle and tasty manner.

You can try to kill him, but he will shrug it off; you can attempt to exile him far far away, but he will effortlessly return! The fears of mortals do not reside in his mind for he has transcended all. Ulamog knows the Path to Exile and the Ur Dragon fears the Wrath of God but Squee cares not for such paltry things as banishment and death. Planeswalkers come and go, legends begin and end, but Squee is eternal, and when you gaze into the future that you fear most, all that remains is Squee.

Here is one example of how this deck might go infinite: if you have <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLST-CSP-100" title="Thermopod" />, Squee, Skyfire Phoenix, and one of the cards that reduce mana costs like Ruby Medallion or Cloud Key, then you can sacrifice Squee and Skyfire Phoenix to <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLST-CSP-100" title="Thermopod" /> for two red mana. You can then use that mana to recast Squee which will then resummon the Skyfire Phoenix to the battlefield. You can repeat this process infinitely. Any ETB effect or many cards that benefits from a high storm count will end the game. With <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-KLD-192" title="Aetherflux Reservoir" /> in play you could also gain infinite life. With <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-THB-125" title="Anax" listItem="T" /> on the field you would be able to produce infinite mana with the tokens he produces.

In a deck like this, red mana is essential. There may be some ways to create a lot of colorless mana, but sometimes that isn’t enough to recast Squee. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-M21-228" title="Chromatic Orrery" /> is very helpful in solving this problem outright. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-FIC-354" title="Relic of Legends" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-GRN-115" title="Runaway Steam-Kin" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-KHM-123" title="Birgi, God of Storytelling" /> are all fantastic at continually creating the appropriate mana for recasting Squee.

Beyond that, the deck has some of the most common red draw spells and a modest removal package. There are six board wipes in the deck, two of them are one sided. Since Squee doesn't mind board wipes, it feels right to add more than usual (I personally only run four at most unless it’s a planeswalker deck). Just remember to time your board wipes appropriately and try not to kill your own combo pieces.

Admittedly, the price of this deck might not be 100% worth the power-level. Even with all its potential of going infinite, this deck requires many pieces in place for those combos to work. A deck like this would be very fun to proxy if you aren’t financially able to build it properly. This is a deck meant for casual pods ranging around bracket 2 or 3. Because of its infinite nature it likely would work better in bracket 3 pods but I’ve known higher powered bracket 2 pods that would be fine playing against a deck like this.
