
## Sokka Vs. Narset

There are many questions intrinsic to the human experience: “Why are we here?” “What happens once we die?” “Is it morally dubious to regularly bribe my friend with dog food to get him to investigate potentially dangerous, active crime scenes?” These are all questions that we as people are confronted with at one time or another in our lives, and although we may never truly find answers to some of these questions within our lifetimes, there is perhaps one universally pondered question that we can attempt to answer today.

“Which card is stronger: <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-MAT-173" title="Narset, Enlightened Exile" /> or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TLA-242" title="Sokka, Tenacious Tactician" />?” we ask ourselves late at night as we gaze out the window at a full moon. The moon sighs and gives no reply. But if it were to give a reply, lets take a look at what it would likely say:

## Prowess for all vs. Prowess for some

The fact that Narset gives prowess to every creature while Sokka only gives it to Allies initially seems like a clear win for Narset. This would be true if we didn’t take into account that Sokka 3D prints his own friends. This simple fact allows a Sokka deck to not have a single creature card in the 99. You can, of course, add some of the stronger Ally kindred creatures if you want, but it seems more on theme with this style of card to build without creatures. Narset can, of course, take better advantage of token-producing noncreature spells, but even then, there are a few niche cards like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-OGW-30" title="Oath of Gideon" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-ZNC-20" title="Retreat to Emeria" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-BFZ-53" title="Unified Front" /> that produce Ally tokens. As the moon (the arbiter of truth in all things magic-adjacent), this is a close but clear victory for Sokka.

## Recursion

The most obvious strength Narset has over Sokka is she can double-dip into the graveyard. Even better than that, Narset can recast your opponent’s noncreature spells by simply attacking. The fact that Narset recurs spells for free and Sokka does not is a solid reason to choose Narset over Sokka for your commander.

## Evasion

One of the saddest things that can happen in Magic is when you swing out with your 62/62 creature and someone chump blocks it with a 1/1 token. Although menace isn’t the greatest keyword to have on a creature, it is a highly underrated one. In a go-wide strategy, it can even be devastating. One shouldn’t only rely on menace to get through, but every creature having menace can make or break a combat step. This extra keyword gives another point to Sokka.

## Final considerations

Beyond that which has already been covered, the final difference between Sokka and Narset is that Narset has a slightly better stat line. Four toughness vs. three toughness can be important, and there might be some occasions where the extra toughness is beneficial, but since everything has prowess, that additional toughness isn’t as hard for Sokka to find in his time of need. At most, I’d be willing to give Narset half a point over this tiny detail, but this is only being considered in the name of thoroughness. Thus, the final tally is Sokka overtakes Narset at 2 points to 1½, making him objectively a slightly better commander. ## Codie, Vociferous Codex (Commander)

This WUBRG monstrosity might not initially seem like a threat (it does prevent you from being able to cast permanents after all) but by the time your opponents realize how insidious Codie truly is, it will already be too late.

At the low low price of losing your ability to cast permanent spells, Codie taps to filter 4 generic mana for WUBRG and essentially gives your next instant or sorcery spell cascade. Being a 5 color commander, Codie allows you to run the most heinous instants and sorceries in all of magic. If you want your friends to play with you again, I would recommend shying away from mass land destruction and extra turn spells, however, those could still be acceptable depending on what your pod is ok with and what bracket you aim to build this deck. I personally like brackets 2 and 3.

The simplest way to build around Codie is to have the lower end of your curve involve a lot of ramp, draw, and some removal. There are a plethora of 2, 3, & 4 mana green instants and sorceries that tutor lands to the battlefield. There are also a plethora of removal staples that you can easily cascade into. As far as board wipes go, I would recommend ones that allow you to keep Codie alive like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-DMC-148" title="Duneblast" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-IKO-24" title="Mythos of Snapdax" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TDC-115" title="Expel the Interlopers" />. If you want to run snow lands, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-KHM-82" title="Blood on the Snow" /> works as well.

For the low to midrange parts of your curve, any draw spells that create treasures are helpful to ramp into the bigger spells. They also help a lot with mana fixing. Any spells like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-DSC-113" title="Brainstorm" /> that let you put cards from your hand on top of your library are also super handy for choosing what you want to cascade into.

The top end of any Codie deck should be some of the highest cmc spells in magic. Although the ultimatums often don't work well with just WUBRG, if the deck ramps enough, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I personally like putting in my favorites of those like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PIP-220" title="Ruinous Ultimatum" /> and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PIKO-185p" title="Emergent Ultimatum" />. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-NCC-215" title="Clone Legion" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-MB2-52" title="Worst Fears" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-J25-399" title="Army of the Damned" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TDM-196" title="Jeskai Revelation" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-RVR-241" title="Revival // Revenge" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLCI-153p" title="Hit the Mother Lode" /> are all solid top end additions too.

Are all these creatures incredible? Haha, no. Are they cheap? Absolutely. This deck thrives on bulk bin monsters that look terrifying when they hit the table. Any high-power creature with trample is an instant include. Think <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-FDN-671" title="Darksteel Colossus" /> or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-BFZ-7" title="Eldrazi Devastator" />.

Creatures that grow themselves—like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-JMP-332" title="Hamletback Goliath" /> or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-LRW-174" title="Hearthcage Giant" />—pile on damage fast. And honestly, part of Tannuk's charm is the jank. Cards like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-LTR-426" title="Oliphaunt" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-ROE-5" title="Hand of Emrakul" />, or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-M3C-37" title="Twins of Discord" /> might not be perfect—but if you've got them lying around, why not? And here's a spicy move: after combat, cast <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-LCI-173" title="Zoyowa's Justice" /> on your warped creature. You've already dealt damage, so instead of watching it get exiled, you shuffle it back and **Discover** for that mana value. Delicious value.

Of course, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-BLC-196" title="Etali, Primal Storm" /> is here too—because free spells are life.

<BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PDSK-129p" title="Charred Foyer // Warped Space" /> and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-BLC-116" title="Sunbird's Invocation" /> crank the chaos up even more. Sunbird triggers off the creature's **mana value**, not warp cost—so every cheap warp cast turns into a free big spell off the top. And <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-WOE-319" title="Warped Space" />? Once per turn, you can play an exiled creature for free. Yes. For. Free.
